International Day of the Tropics

The International Day of the Tropics was endorsed by the United Nations in 2016 and is celebrated annually on 29 June. It commemorates the date when in 2014, the inaugural State of the Tropics report (an initiative led by James Cook University in collaboration with eleven institutions) was launched.

Each year, the International Day of the Tropics is celebrated with a special activity at James Cook University for the Global Tropics Future Young Scholars. Sprinting the Tropics is a modified design sprint where students are placed in small mixed groups to address a tropical challenge as creatively as possible. It is fast, fun, and inspirational. Guest speakers and mentors support the students to innovate creative solutions to solve STEM problems related to living in the Tropics.
